This is how Helpline works

Have you ever wondered who can help in an emergency if the police or ambulance service don’t understand your language on the phone? We can! We help people in need and provide language interpretation – over the phone, round the clock, throughout Saxony. We facilitate communication and build trust and reassurance in many languages.

Emergency call:

The Chemnitz Emergency Control Centre (112) contacts Helpline and requires assistance with an emergency call in Ukrainian. The volunteer assists with language mediation. During the conference call, the nature of the emergency becomes clear: a 17-year-old is feeling very unwell. He has a racing heart and says his heart is ‘burning’. An ambulance is dispatched to him.

Emergency call:

The caller phones Helpline in English on behalf of her husband. He has a high fever and has lost consciousness several times already. She had already contacted 112, but due to the language barrier, she was told it was not an emergency – presumably they thought it was just a mild fever. She then rang Helpline. The volunteer dialled 112 and described the situation in German. The seriousness of the situation was recognised and an ambulance was sent to the family.

Referral advice:

A woman writes an email in Arabic. She lives with her husband in Dresden. During an argument, he threatened and hit her. She now needs help and wants to know what she can do. The team refers her to the local women’s refuge and the appropriate local counselling service.

About the Helpline

With the project Helpline Sachsen, the RAA operates a peer-based multilingual emergency and help hotline, which is largely supported by volunteers with and without a history of migration. It is a helpline that is available around the clock in more than eight languages. The Helpline Sachsen is also an inclusive, transcultural and empowering project: over 60 volunteers with a wide range of origins, backgrounds and migration histories have a wealth of languages and experience and contribute their professional, social and cultural knowledge effectively. This is a benefit for everyone involved: for the volunteers themselves, for those seeking help, the police and emergency services, public authorities, advice centres and doctors.
