How the helpline works

We bridge language barriers, facilitate communication and create trust and security in many languages.

Beispiel 1

The Chemnitz Rescue Coordination Centre (112) calls the helpline and needs assistance with a phone call in Ukrainian. The volunteer provides support with language mediation. The emergency becomes clear in the conference call: a 17-year-old is in a very bad way. He has palpitations and says his heart is "burning". An ambulance is sent to him.

Beispiel 2

The caller calls the helpline for her husband in English. He has a high temperature and has been unconscious several times. She had already contacted 112, but due to the language barrier she was told it was not an emergency - they probably thought it was just a mild fever. She then called the helpline. The volunteer then dialled 112 and described the case in German. The severity of the case is recognised and an ambulance is sent to the family.

Beispiel 3

A woman writes an email in Arabic. She lives with her husband in Dresden. He has threatened and beaten her in an argument. She now needs help and wants to know what she can do. The team refers her to the local women's refuge and the local counselling centre.

About the helpline

With the Helpline Saxony project, the RAA operates a peer-based multilingual emergency and help hotline that is largely supported by volunteers with and without a history of migration. The helpline is available around the clock in more than eight languages. Helpline Sachsen is also an inclusive, transcultural and empowering project: over 60 volunteers from a wide range of origins, backgrounds and migration histories have a wealth of languages and experience and contribute their professional, social and cultural knowledge effectively. This is a benefit for everyone involved: for the volunteers themselves, for those seeking help, the police and emergency services, authorities, advice centres and doctors.
